In agriculture and gardening, magnesium sulfate is used to correct magnesium deficiency in soil (magnesium is an essential element in the chlorophyll molecule). It is most commonly applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes, and peppers. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil amendments (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility.

Organic Lawn Care Basics
•	Feed the Soil- Compost is one of the best things you can do for your soil to support a healthy lawn.
•	Feed the Grass- Leave grass clippings on the lawn to recycle nutrients, add organic matter, and reduce the need for fertilizers by a half.
•	Reseed Annually- Thick turf is one of the best ways to control weeds. Seed in late summer or early fall with the right mix and make sure your soil is well aerated.
•	Test the Soil- Soil tests help identify the need for soil amendments such as lime and compost
•	Mow High- Cut grass at 3-4 inches. This conserves water and keeps out weeds. Keep blades sharp to limit disease.
•	Water Only As Needed- Too much water can make your lawn vulnerable to disease.
•	Weed Control- Pull weeds or use an organic product like corn gluten to keep weeds from germinating. For spot weed control, try a mixture of lemon juice and vinegar.
•	Pest Control- Common pests can be controlled with beneficial nematodes. Milky spore powder is another effective control for Japanese beetle grubs. Using compost or liquid compost tea also helps to keep lawns healthy and pest-free.

General Tips
1		Wondering what to do with all those fallen pine needles? Spread a thick layer around acid-loving plants like holly, ferns, dogwoods and marigolds. As the needles decompose, they’ll deposit their acid into the soil.
2		Don’t wait until Earth Day to plant a tree on your lawn. Trees increase in value over the years, and mature trees can raise a home’s property value by 15% or more.
3		When buying annual or perennials, choose plants that have buds but no blooms. That way, the plants can use the first two to three weeks developing better root systems. The flowers will be healthier that way.
4		Building a garden? Keep your five senses in mind. A water fountain or wind chime can add gentle ambient noise. Herbs taste great and grow with little help. To release their smell, crush a few leaves between your fingers.
5		Grass clippings can be a great source of nitrogen for your compost, but they can smell awful. Blend your clippings with dried leaves, sawdust, straw or hay. The carbon in these materials will help aerate the clippings and reduce the smell.
6		Bring your garden indoors. Cut flower stems at an angle in the morning while it’s still cool, then put them in a bowl of warm water. To avoid bacteria, which reduces to the life of cut flowers, add a tablespoon of bleach to the water. You’ll enjoy longer-lasting blooms.
7		Bugged by mosquito's? One bat can eat over 3,000 mosquito's in a single evening. Attract more of these creatures by installing a bat house. You can build one yourself for about $20, or purchase a house for about $50. That’s still less than the cost of most bug zappers.
8		When’s the last time you sharpened the blade of your lawn mower? Blades grow dull with repeated use, and a dull blade can shred grass tips and encourage disease. For best results, have your blade sharpened about once a year.
9		Go organic without going broke. Get your food from a local farmers’ market or a roadside stand. If you can’t find one nearby, grow your own organic produce. Even a few potted radishes can save you money in the long run.
10		Need garden ties? Use panty hose. The flexible fabric holds soft-stemmed plants like tomatoes and peppers without damage or breakage.
