2009 LEGISLATION SB 91... Maryland Seed Law - Lawn & Turf Grass Seed

SB 91 changes the Seed law to require cool season turf grasses to be labeled with a sell-by date and will extend the valid germination test date from nine months to fifteen months. This will align Maryland's Seed Law with the Association of American Seed Control Officials' Recommended uniform State Seed law and the Federal Seed Act. Consumers and the seed industry will benefit from the additional information provided by the sell-by date. The current Seed Law as it pertains to test dates does not allow for the longer shelf life of lawn and turf cool season grass seeds. The current test date format required by the Seed Law does not provide consumers with adequate information. The "sell-by date" helps consumers and helps retailers to maintain stock rotation.

Moss and algae are primitive green plants often found in densely shaded and moist lawn areas and sometimes on landscape materials and buildings. The best control involves improving soil drainage, increasing air circulation and light intensity, and planting shade-tolerant ground covers or turf grass varieties. Chemical controls for algae are available but are only a temporary solution and may cause injury to adjacent vegetation.

DOG DAMAGE: Grass may be injured by dog urine. The spots resemble Dollar Spot or Rhizoctonia Blight. The difference is that outside the area of dead grass there is often a zone of grass with luxuriant growth. Heavy watering will wash down excess salts and help the grass recover.

Eastern tent caterpillar is a common pest of wild cherry trees in the spring. Eggs are contained in 1-inch long, black, gall-like masses on slender twigs of wild cherry trees. Eggs generally hatch around the first week of April. Young caterpillars are black. They spin silk tents in branches. The caterpillars enlarge the tents as they grow. Mature caterpillars have a white stripe down the back. Most feeding damage is done in May. Preferred host trees in addition to wild cherry include crabapple and apple. Forest tent caterpillar has a similar life cycle. It prefers to feed on deciduous shade trees and flowering fruit trees. These caterpillars have oval white spots down the back and do not construct tents. Management: Prune out egg masses during the fall, winter or early spring, and destroy them. Mechanically destroy the webs and caterpillars in the evening during April. If an insecticide application is needed, use B.t. (Bacillus thuringiensis) when the caterpillars are small and be sure to penetrate the tents with the spray. If possible, remove wild cherry hosts on your property.
